How to create a static IP address in Windows?

Your computer must have an IP address, your IP address is what identifies your network. IP addresses such as telephone numbers, that uniquely identifies your device so that other devices can communicate with each other / interact. In the IP address of your network consists of 2 (two) kind, can be either static IP or dynamic IP.

Most of today our computer network using a DHCP server (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) to manage and assign IP addresses on a network. It is considered a dynamic IP address, because they are only temporary - after a specified time (or when you turn on your computer).

A Windows XP computer can be set with a static IP address - one that does not change, even when you restart your computer - with a few simple steps. However, using static IP addresses can be tricky, because you need to know which IP addresses are available for use. If you choose an IP address outside the reach of your network recognizes it, your computer will not be able to connect to other devices, including routers or switches. If you are in business network, talk with your network administrator before setting a static IP address. If you are on a home network, check your router settings, to see what IP addresses are using a router.

When choosing an IP address, be sure not to choose one that is used by computers or other devices. Using the same IP address for more than one device will cause connection problems. At the command prompt (Start> Run> CMD) run ipconfig "/ all" command to see all the IP addresses currently in use.

Once you are sure you want to switch to a static IP address and the address you have to choose, change the settings easily. Access to the Network Connections window, either by right-clicking on My Network Places (on the desktop or Start menu) and choose Properties, or through the Control Panel. Then select the connection you want to give a static IP address for. (Most likely, this will be Local Area Connection) Scroll. Under the list of services until you get to the "Internet Protocol (TCP / IP)." Click Properties, a dialog box will appear.

If you currently use DHCP and dynamic IP address, the radio button next to "Obtain IP address automatically" is selected. To change to a static IP address, click the button below it ("Use the following IP address"). Enter the IP address you plan to use, as well as the subnet mask and gateway address. (255.255.255.0 subnet mask is most likely if you are on a home network, and gateway address is the router's IP address.)

To be able to connect to the Internet, you will need a DNS (Domain Name System) server. Hopefully your router can perform this function; type of router IP address next to "Preferred DNS server."

After you click OK to close all windows and save your changes, your computer will assume the new IP address. To verify that Windows apply the changes, go back to the command prompt and run "ipconfig" again, you should see a new IP address is displayed. Next to the line marked "DHCP enabled" must now say no, not yes.

Your computer now has a static IP address. Assuming there are no conflicts with other devices, and assuming the IP address (and other information) you enter is valid, your computer will now continue that IP address until you say otherwise. To re-enable DHCP, simply return to the network properties and click the appropriate radio button. (You'll also want to re-activate "Obtain DNS server address automatically.")
